The word autophagy comes to us from the Greek “auto”meaning self and “phagy” meaning to eat. So the literal meaning of autophagy is “self-eating.”
At first thought this may sound like a horrific fate, but autophagy is in-fact a state highly sought after by those seeking to achieve increased health & lifespan. It’s a critically important process for cellular maintenance and tissue rejuvenation.
Put simply, autophagy is our bodies way of cleaning house. Old & degraded proteins are broken down and recycled towards the end of repairing old cells and creating new ones. Autophagy occurs in response to fasting, ketosis, endurance exercise, cold shock therapy, and even drinking coffee. YAY!
Autophagy cannot occur until and unless we give our bodies a break from consumption. The body typically needs to be running at caloric deficit for a period of time before autophagy can be stimulated. Here's a great video from Thomas DeLauer on fasting and autophagy.
